1882. Ilia Brodsky, the orphan of the shtetls, a landless Jew driven out of Russia by the pogroms, crosses Europe with his sister Olga. In Vienna, he meets the young Theodor Herzl, a dandy who is starting to break into the world of letters. This fleeting meeting with the man who will imagine a few years later the future State of Israel will change his life. In London, where he rubbed shoulders with anarchist networks in the East End, then in Paris, Ilia began to investigate Herzl. Why did this worldly Jew, perfectly integrated into the Vienna of the Habsburgs, suddenly take up the cause of brothers without a homeland of which he is ashamed?
