Description Cliff Ragan was a horse thief by trade, but also a friend to the author's grandfather, A. A. Brierly who was Inyo County, California undersheriff from 1913 to 1915. A. A. Brierly met Cliff when Cliff was arrested for horse stealing in Inyo County in 1914. Cliff served three terms in San Quentin, two terms in Nevada State Penitentiary, one term in Idaho State Penitentiary, and enumerable time in county jails. Cliff's horse stealing exploits occurred in Madera, Fresno, San Joaquin, Inyo, Kern, among other California Counties; and in Nevada and Idaho. Born in 1870, Cliff first went to prison at age 16 for horse stealing. This book traces Cliff's life based on prison records, court files, first hand stories by A. A. Brierly, newspaper articles, and other sources. The book also tells the story of finding Cliff's resting place, and chronicles the research efforts of the author. This edition is the black and white photo issue. About the Author Robert A. Pearce was born in Bishop, California. He is the fifth generation of his family to live in Bishop. He recieved his B. S. from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in Agricultrual Management, his M. S. is from Texas A&M in Range Science, and his Ph. D. is from Colorado State University in Rangeland Ecosystem Science. He has authored The Owens Valley Controversy and A. A. Brierly: The Untold Storry, and A Brother Lost, a tribute to Hugh B. Pearce. The book cover for "A Brother Lost" designed by Rebecca Johnson was given The Silver Award for book cover design by the American Authors Association in 2004. Book was authored by Rob Pearce. Rob is a reining horse competitor, National Reining Horse Association Judge, a private helicopter pilot, and he has many hobbies including resoring his grandfather's (A. A. Brierly) 1950 Dodge pickup.
