Description Between the Black Mares is a collection of stories and poems about a fading rural lifestyle and a tribute to the horses with whom Glenda has shared her life. Her personal journey of healing and self-acceptance has never been far from the friendship of a horse. About the Author Glenda Farrier is a lifelong horsewoman, whose interests and experiences represent a cross section of life in rural America. Raised a farmer's daughter, married to a former rodeo cowboy and a national champion carriage driver herself, she says her life is ultimately governed by a 50-year-old sourdough starter. She is an award winning cowboy poet but she calls her poetry about horses and rural life "folklife poetry." Whatever it is, it was recognized as significant by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D. C. The Smithsonian asked Glenda to share her poetry for two weeks in 1996 with people from all over the world at their annual Festival of American Folklife on the National Mall. They also invited her husband Steve, who was a team roper, to demonstrate roping skills and help countless children practice roping a steer head. Glenda's life work has been in human services, specifically helping individuals with disabilities live lives of meaning and value as participating members of their own communities. Her first passion however, has always been horses. She and her husband Steve live on a high ridge in southwest Iowa with horses, dogs and a cat or two.
