A story of the times. Jos and his family live in small town in the department of Sacatep quez, Guatemala. Their life, which is simple and good, becomes challenging when their earnings become insufficient to maintain the family. Concerned for the welfare of his family whom he loves, Jos makes the difficult decision to make his way to the United States in search of work opportunities. Based on a story told to the author, this book recounts Jos 's journey north as well as examines the effect of his absence on the family he leaves behind. Readers learn facets of Guatemalan culture through entry level vocabulary and grammar. About the Author: Jennifer Degenhardt taught middle and high school Spanish for 24 years. She recently decided to combine her language skills with those of storytelling, specifically involving kids and culture. Her books highlight cultural, social, economic and political themes necessary for continued conversation, both in the classroom and outside. She hopes her stories will provide a platform for discussion, as anything can be solved - to some degree - with a conversation.
