Jones was born in Newton, Mississippi, and he grew up in Winn Parish, Louisiana. He received a BA in social studies education and an MA in American history from Louisiana Tech University, going on to earn a Ph D from Texas A&M University, where he specialized in the American Civil War. He has more than thirty years' experience teaching in Louisiana, and he also worked for several years with the Louisiana Office of State Parks as manager of the Fort Saint Jean Baptiste State Commemorative Area. A professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, he has published seven books on Louisiana and Civil War history.
