"It was 50 minutes by train to Brasov, and I took a taxi from the station to the address Mr Poenaru had given me. I felt a wave of apprehension on reaching 50A Nicolae Titulescu St, the block where the Patria cinema was located. It was a four-floor block and entrance C, where the Poenarus lived, was accessed from the rear. I would soon see where Magdalena Poenaru had spent her childhood and possibly where she had been born. In any case, the place where she had spent a considerable part of her life. I climbed the stairs she had used so many times. I rang the doorbell, feeling uneasy. Her father answered the door.  The scene inside was more tragic than I had anticipated. Two devastated people, mourning their only child, had made their three-room apartment into a shrine to their daughter's memory. A large, framed photograph of Magdalena hung on the living room wall, surrounded with fresh chrysanthemums, and a number of candles were burning on a shelf beneath. The television screen was draped with a large black cloth. Also, I'd expected to find a wealthier sort of family, due to the speed with which Constantin Poenaru had obtained approval for the exhumation and the General Prosecutor's decision to open an investigation. Now I understood - Constantin Poenaru hadn't needed to use any influential connections to get his way. The authorities must have been moved by the agony of these two people at the sudden loss of their only child."
